Gamestage and lootstage: difficulty and loot progression

Learn why another biome changes enemy difficulty and available loot even when your character level stays the same.

Description

Gamestage helps scale events and enemy groups. Lootstage affects loot selection. They are separate values. Numbers below refer to PC V3.2; Sandbox settings, bonuses and the specific event can change the result.

Three different numbers

Character level grows through XP and provides skill points. Gamestage selects spawn difficulty stages. Lootstage helps select eligible loot groups and quality. World day, building skulls and these values are not interchangeable.

Higher lootstage does not turn every container into a weapon crate. Container type and its item pool still matter. One empty container or poor roll does not prove a fault.

Gamestage calculation and death

Without biome, quest or effect bonuses: round down (character level + credited survival days) × 1.2. Credited days are capped at character level. Death removes 2 credited days, with a floor of 0. Joining a server on day 300 does not give a new character 300 survival days.

With a biome, the expression before other effects is: [level × (1 + biome modifier + quest modifier) + days + biome bonus + quest bonus] × 1.2. Sandbox settings can scale biome contributions and the global result. The game applies rounding and other effects; examples assume those other effects are absent.

Lootstage, biome, building and party

Lootstage accounts for character level, biome, building tier, container bonuses and active effects such as Lucky Looter. Biome progression can impose limits. Increasing loot abundance and increasing lootstage solve different problems.

Party lootstage takes the highest calculated member value rather than adding everyone’s levels. This differs from horde gamestage weighting. Bonuses to item quantity or a specific loot type are still separate from lootstage. Keep biome, building, equipment and settings the same when comparing results.

A multiplayer horde

For players handled by the same horde party spawner, gamestages are combined with diminishing weights. Sorted highest first, weights are 1, 0.5, 0.25 and so on. Values 100, 60 and 20 produce 135 before event selection, rather than a simple sum of 180.

Concurrent enemy limits, waves, party size and gamestage are separate factors. A weaker party member does not automatically lower the horde to their level. Do not plan defense from the calendar alone.

Worked example

A level 20 character with 10 credited survival days has a base forest gamestage of 36: (20 + 10) × 1.2. With default multipliers, no quest or bonuses, snow gives 144: (20 × 4 + 10 + 30) × 1.2. This does not mean 144 zombies or lootstage 144.

Common mistake

Multiplying the entire forest gamestage by the biome multiplier, or treating lootstage as guaranteed item quality.
