Look for drinks and murky water in loot, vending machines and trader inventories. You can also fill an empty jar from a lake, river or pool and boil the water.

How do I fill an empty jar with water?
Hold the jar, approach actual water and aim at its surface. Use the secondary action, normally the right mouse button on PC, and wait for filling to finish. You receive murky water.

Jar returns depend on the Jar Refund world setting and the consumed item. Below a 100% return rate, some jars disappear. Not every drink always returns a container.

Install a cooking pot in the campfire, add fuel and select the water recipe. Keeping the pot in your backpack is not enough. Collect the finished water from the output slots.

Yes, but without suitable protection you normally lose health and risk dysentery. Boiling is safer. A water purifier installed in headgear protects you while drinking, but does not turn your jars of murky water into clean crafting ingredients.
