Backpacks and encumbrance: V3.3 system and V3.4 EXP changes

Check your game branch first. V3.3 introduced equippable backpacks; V3.4 EXP adds search and category filters to backpacks and containers, plus changes to several capacity-related effects.

Description

V3.2 Stable uses the legacy 9×5 inventory grid with 45 slots and has no equippable Small, Medium or Large Backpack item system. V3.3 EXP changes the base grid to 8×6: four rows are free to use and two rows are encumbered. It adds Small, Medium and Large Backpacks in six quality levels. They can be crafted, looted or bought and must be equipped in the new Backpack slot. A backpack can add encumbered slots up to a maximum inventory of 96 slots in an 8×12 grid. Pack Mule and Armor Pocket Mods remove encumbrance; the official announcement does not publish the exact capacity, recipe or price of every backpack quality.

What changed in V3.3 EXP

The base inventory changes from the legacy 45-slot 9×5 grid to 48 slots arranged 8×6. The first four rows are free to use and the next two rows are encumbered.

Small, Medium and Large Backpacks have six quality levels each. You may craft, loot or buy them, then equip one in the dedicated Backpack slot. The maximum announced grid is 8×12, or 96 slots.

How to deal with encumbrance

Encumbrance is based on occupied slots beyond your current free carrying capacity. Combining partial stacks or storing unneeded items can remove the immediate penalty without discarding valuable equipment.

Pack Mule and Armor Pocket Mods free slots from encumbrance. They do not increase stack size, and an unequipped modification or backpack does not provide its effect.

Do not confuse three different backpacks

The V3.3 equipment backpack is an item worn to expand inventory. A dropped backpack after death is the container holding lost equipment under the world's death settings. Sports bags and similar containers found in buildings are loot containers. These objects do not share the same purpose.

V3.3 EXP b17: fixed inventory and equipment bugs

The first V3.3 EXP build could delete stored items when a vehicle was picked up on a dedicated server. This bug is fixed in b17: the server again checks storage before allowing pickup. Empty the vehicle before picking it up.

Earlier V3.3 EXP builds could disconnect players after equipment changes when three or more players were connected. The b17 notes mark clothing changes disconnecting other players as fixed. This was a game bug, not a rule of backpack capacity. Check the build number on both the client and the server.

The b17 announcement still lists an NRE when reading the last magazine stack on the toolbelt with a left click, missing muzzle flashes, and a chest capacity update issue when an actively used chest is upgraded in multiplayer. These issues are separate from backpack capacity.

What V3.4 EXP changes in the backpack screen

Search backpack and container contents by item name, or filter by category. This helps find supplies without manually scanning every slot.

The V3.4 EXP notes list updates to Night Stalker Vol. 4, Steroids, Chicken Nuggets and the completed Fireman's Almanac set in connection with backpack capacity. The announcement gives no exact effect values, so use the values shown in your current build.

Known V3.4 EXP issue: locked inventory slots reset after closing the inventory. The announcement does not state that this affects every platform or stable branch.

What to do

  1. Check the version and branch shown by your game. The equippable backpack system arrived in V3.3; the search, category filters and listed effects here are V3.4 EXP changes for PC/Steam.
  2. In V3.3 EXP, open the equipment screen and equip the backpack in the new Backpack slot. Carrying the item without equipping it does not apply the backpack capacity.
  3. Watch which inventory slots are encumbered. Added backpack slots can still cause encumbrance when occupied; a larger grid does not make every slot penalty-free.
  4. Use Pack Mule and Armor Pocket Mods to remove encumbrance from slots, or store lower-priority loot. These effects change how many occupied slots are free of the penalty; they do not enlarge item stacks.

Worked example

A newly equipped V3.3 backpack may reveal more storage positions, but filling those positions can still slow you. The useful gain is the extra room together with enough Pack Mule or pocket effects to cover the slots you intend to occupy without a penalty.

Common mistake

Assuming that a larger backpack automatically removes encumbrance from every slot it adds, or searching for equippable backpack items while playing V3.2 Stable or console.
