Base activity and screamers: why production brings danger
Working devices and certain activities contribute to activity that the world reacts to. As production grows, prepare to detect and deal with approaching enemies.
Description
Activity that attracts enemies is not the same as your character's body temperature. A cold biome does not remove the need to protect working production. World settings also affect the situation.
Production needs awareness
A large workshop makes crafting easier but focuses attention on menus and storage. Arrange passages so leaving a station does not trap you in a corner.
Listen and check important approaches during long jobs. No visible enemy when you opened the forge does not promise peace until the queue finishes.
A screamer changes the scale of the problem
One enemy near the base can lead to a larger fight. Choose an attack angle and moment that lets you finish the threat quickly without running into more zombies.
If the situation escalates, move to a prepared position. Running chaotically between storage chests can impede repairs and expose valuable production equipment.
Do not apply old screamer chains to 3.2
In 3.2 screamers were removed from screamer-called groups to prevent that route of calling further screamers. This does not disable the threat itself or every other way a new screamer can appear.
Distinguish enemies already nearby, a new call and other world events. Two screamers in one fight do not by themselves prove that one summoned the other.
Optimize how you use stations
Constantly producing things you do not use costs fuel, handling time and protection. Build queues around expected demand and a sensible reserve.
Place production according to travel routes, visibility and defense. Do not treat an arbitrary distance between stations as a universal guarantee against screamers. Even an efficient base needs a response plan.
What to do
- Notice which activities or periods of production precede enemy arrivals.
- Inspect the workshop surroundings, approaches and visibility of important directions.
- Do not leave the only person operating stations without a way to move or fight.
- When a screamer appears, assess a safe way to stop the threat and prepare for additional enemies.
Worked example
Moving a forge to snow changes its surroundings but does not remove activity from operating it. Observation and an escape route still matter.
Common mistake
Confusing base activity with body temperature or assuming one building trick disables every enemy.
