Why an electrical device is not working
Follow the connection from the power source to the device. Check the source, wires, switches and total power demand in that order.
Description
Wiring has a direction: a component receives power from its parent and passes it to connected children when its conditions allow. A timer or sensor can therefore stop power even when the source works. Start with a simple working circuit before adding control components; this makes the failed step easier to locate.
Trace from source to consumer
First check that the power source operates and has its required supply. Then follow the connection through switches, sensors and relays to the device. Inspect one segment at a time.
A trap or turret may also need compatible ammunition, targeting settings or an activation condition. One illuminated component does not prove every function of the circuit works.
Power budgeting and combat coverage are separate
Add the demand of planned active devices and compare it with available power. Reserve capacity for expansion. A balanced power budget does not fix an incorrectly connected cable.
A powered trap must cover the relevant enemy approach. Keep repair and ammunition access. Failure of one important component can disable the downstream defense.
What to do
- Check that your source can supply power and is switched on. A generator needs its working components and fuel.
- Equip the wire tool to inspect connections and the power state of components.
- Follow one connection at a time. Check each switch, sensor or timer between the source and the device.
- Add up the power required by connected devices. A powered source alone does not mean that the complete installation has enough capacity.
Worked example
With an illustrative 100 W supply, 80 W of active devices leaves 20 W. Adding an active 55 W branch would raise demand to 135 W. Recalculate the state in which devices are actually on, not just a quiet daytime state.
Common mistake
Assuming that a visible wire proves the whole upstream circuit is supplying power.
