Forges and workstations: from your first craft to a reliable workshop
Production needs an unlocked recipe, the right station, ingredients and sometimes an installed tool. Check the whole chain before collecting materials.
Description
Unlocking a workstation does not automatically unlock every recipe it can process. The forge can also use smelting or direct ingredients depending on world rules. This changes where materials are stored and how you plan production.
The workstation milestones
With magazine progression, Forge Ahead develops Workstations. The forge requires skill level 4, workbench 10, cement mixer 34 and chemistry station 50. These are levels of that crafting skill, not overall character levels.
You craft the workbench in your backpack; the cement mixer and chemistry station are crafted at a workbench. A usable station also needs its construction materials. A destroyed station in a building is a different object from your functioning workshop.
Two ways to run a forge
With smelting enabled, smelt the input first. The forge's material counters are a separate supply: ore in your backpack is not already smelted iron. Without smelting, the recipe uses physical inventory ingredients.
The base recipe for one forged iron uses 10 smelted iron and 5 smelted clay, or 10 scrap iron and 1 clay soil. Forged steel uses 20 and 10 smelted units, or 20 scrap iron and 2 clay soil. Choose the table matching your world's settings.
A small tool can stop the whole chain
Forged steel requires a crucible in the forge. More fuel or iron does not replace a missing crucible. Similarly, boiling water requires a cooking pot in the campfire.
Distinguish a recipe requirement from a production speed improvement. A tool that speeds up certain recipes need not be mandatory for every craft. Read the individual product card before buying an expensive upgrade.
Plan throughput, not just more stations
Extra workbenches help when you have enough ingredients and jobs to divide between them. If the bottleneck is a crucible, engine or unlock, another station does not resolve it.
Set aside storage for inputs, intermediate components and finished equipment. Reserve repair supplies and ammunition before a large building project. Fuel, production time and activity that attracts enemies are also workshop costs.
What to do
- Open the product card and read its recipe requirements, including tools installed in the station.
- Obtain or craft the required station, place it and open its interface.
- Supply ingredients and fuel when required. Put each station tool in its designated slot.
- Choose the quantity, start production and collect the result. Watch the queue, fuel and free output space.
Worked example
To make 20 forged iron with direct ingredients, the base recipe needs 200 scrap iron and 20 clay soil. In smelting mode, check for 200 iron units and 100 clay units in the forge's counters instead.
Common mistake
Carrying a crucible or cooking pot in your backpack as if that installed it in the required station.
