Levels, perks and magazines: what actually unlocks equipment
Character level, perks, crafting skills and item quality describe different things. Separate them to plan your next useful upgrade.
Description
In a world using magazine progression, reading the relevant series increases its crafting skill. Perks can improve your performance and influence related finds, but they do not replace every recipe requirement. World settings can change the progression model.
Ask four different questions
Character level describes overall progression. Skill points buy attributes and perks subject to their requirements. Crafting skills determine access to specific recipes and qualities. The Q number on an item is its quality, not your character level.
A perk book provides its described effect. A crafting magazine advances its specified discipline. A schematic unlocks a particular recipe. Read the description before selling a find or handing it to another player.
The Tools Digest example
Tools Digest develops Harvesting Tools. The Q1 iron fireaxe unlocks at level 11 of that skill, while Q6 unlocks at 25. Steel axes begin at level 26, with Q6 requiring 60.
Reaching 26 does not make a new steel axe automatically better than every tool you own. Compare actual block damage, stamina use and durability along with the cost of making it.
A perk does not guarantee a container's contents
A bonus to related finds operates within its relevant conditions and containers. It does not turn every crate into a guaranteed source of your chosen magazine. Plan a route with several suitable containers instead of relying on one roll.
Before spending a point, decide whether you need better fighting or harvesting immediately, or progress toward a particular production route. These goals may support each other but are not identical.
Coordinate the next threshold in a team
Agree who is closest to a useful unlock. One magazine given to a teammate just short of a workbench can help everyone sooner than an equal distribution of every series.
Specialization has a cost: other players depend on the crafter being available. Keep common finished components in shared storage and record needs before an expedition. Playing solo, prioritize thresholds that remove your current bottleneck.
What to do
- Choose a specific item and required quality. Open its unlock table.
- Identify the crafting skill and the magazine that develops it.
- Compare that skill's current level with the requirement. Do not substitute your overall character level.
- Check the station and components too. Reaching a level does not create a workbench or supply its materials.
Worked example
You have Harvesting Tools level 10. One more level in that skill unlocks the Q1 iron fireaxe. Another overall character level is not itself the missing crafting level.
Common mistake
Assuming a high character level or powerful perk unlocked every quality of a tool.
