Use an axe primarily for wood and a pickaxe for stone and metal. Iron and steel axes do not replace the stone axe for repairing and upgrading blocks.
Stone Axe
Craft your first stone axe immediately in your backpack: 2 small stones, 2 plant fibers and 2 wood. No forge or workbench is needed. Pick stones off the ground and punch grass and small bushes.
Iron Fireaxe
Craft an iron fireaxe in your backpack at Harvesting Tools level 11. Read Tools Digest to develop this skill. You need forged iron, not ordinary scrap iron.
Steel Axe
A steel axe needs a workbench and Harvesting Tools level 26. Steel Tool Parts are a separate ingredient; wood and forged steel alone are not enough.
